How do I start a personal statement?

October 29, 2009 - 2:08 pm 1 Comment

In english class we’re doing a project which involves writing a personal statement introducing ourselves/ our goals to our teacher. I have no idea how to start mine! Absolutly nothing. Zip. I don’t want to start with something normal like "Hello, my name is…" type of thing. If anyone has suggestions on what I could do, please let me know! You’d be a big help! Thanks!

Start writing what your name is, how old are you and where you are from. Say where you study and where you studied before. State all the major courses that you did. They include school you attended/ attend, university and the course you are doing. Place where you are working and why ( e.g. may be it’s your career or just to support you through your studies.).
State you hobbies, what you like to do in your free time (e.g. like studying other languages such as French and German), sports you play e.g. roller-skating.
State what your goal is and what you hope to get out of your future (e.g. like I want to become a doctor and help cancer patients.)

Why do humans have the need to explain all things by using a religious blanket statement?

When the need to know the answers exceeds logic and rational thought, can this be classified as crazy?

Should I join a class action lawsuit?

October 27, 2009 - 9:40 am 3 Comments

I own shares of a company called "Wireless Facilities, Inc." that have plummetted in value over the last couple years. Recently, the latest headlines indicate that about half a dozen law firms have filed class action lawsuits alleging that the company made false and misleading statements and ommissions and engaged in backdating stock options.

To be honest, I haven’t followed this lousy stock closely enough to know what is really going on. Is there any reason why I shouldn’t join the class action suit? How do I choose from among the various law firms representing plaintiffs?

I get asked this question a lot as an atty and all your solutions are bad. If you don’t join the class action, you would have to hire a separate atty to represent you. It’s true that the attorneys in a class action make most of the money and that’s too bad, but it’s reality. When my clients ask me, I generally advise them to join in a class action. A little bit of money is better than nothing at all. I’d choose the largest law firm also, as a previous answerer suggested.

Is it possible to have 1 switch statement check 2 variables in Java?

October 27, 2009 - 9:40 am 3 Comments

I have 2 variables that check the same cases and do the same command based on those cases. I know I could copy and paste the whole block and just substitute the variable name, but I want to condense my code and was wondering if it was possible to have a single switch statement check 2 variables in Java?

You can combine the 2 variables in a arithmetic statement that evaluates to an int to do that. You can even write a method with those variables as arguments and returns an int:

switch( decision(a,b) ){
case 1:
// stuff
break;
case 2:
// stuff
break;
}

static int decision(int a, int b){
/*
do some logic on the values of a and be to decide what to do
and set int c to a value you want
*/
return c;
}

Can you offer new ideas about how the company I established can accomplish its mission statement sooner?

October 27, 2009 - 9:40 am 6 Comments

My company’s mission statement:

To educate humanity by making language acquisition more available and affordable for everyone in the world.

It is the concrete goal of my company to make a 100% free university for those who have no financial means or hope of entering a school or tertiary education institution because of poverty or circumstances beyond their control.

I currently have a very small company in Japan which is teaching English as a second language. I would like to realise my goal by creating this charitable school through my business profits. For that to happen must I first increase the profits of my company to pay for it, or are there ways I can start now? If there are ways I can start now, what are they?

I REALLY need and look forward to your assistance in helping me reach this possibly lofty goal.

Sincerely,
Damian

Hi Damian,

Well, the first place to start would be to insure your house is in order. Is the new business incorporated as a non-profit or charitable company? If it is, I would start fundraising asap. If not, get that done first to avoid legal hassles further down the road and allow you to get grant receiving status by your government. Also, if you’re planning on using your company’s profits to fund this project, having a charitable number will allow you to write off the donation from one to the other for tax reasons (talk to an accountant to make sure it’s legal in your country to do that first though!).

I run a similar enterprise in Canada that focuses on global highschool education. We have a two tiered fundraising program. The first tier is run by volunteer university students who are responsible for holding smaller fundraisers throughout the year. They also work within the community to distribute information about what we do and to help local community endeavours (for example: we’re establishing a drop in centre next year to help local highschool students with homework, provide internet services etc.). The second tier is our Board of Directors. We hold 2-3 major fundraisers each year. Our big one this year is a few of us climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania during an aid mission to Africa to raise funds for new office space.

This model seems to work well for a small sized company (there are only 3 of us!) and we project annual revenues of over 1.2 million CDN for the next 5 years using it. I would suggest mining for personnel in your community, start with a local volunteer service, most larger centrals have one. After that, look at what events suit your group. I’ll list a few sources to great fundrasing ideas that have worked for us in the past.

Don’t get me wrong, all of this is a LOT of work, I work 7 days a week, sometimes over 16 hrs a day to get everything done (plus I’m still in university!). Don’t let the size of the project daunt you though, it’s a very worthwhile endeavour. Check out our website at www.shipsofhope.com and if you have any questions or you want some help with your project feel free to email me

Good luck with your company and I hope to hear more about it in the future!

Which statement is not how a scientist should act when using the scientific method?

Which statement is not how a scientist should act when using the scientific method?

experiment with only a few organisms or test subjects to keep the number of variables in the experiment manageable

randomize any variable that is impossible to control, like seed genetics

use statistically large samples in experiments to ensure that uncontrollable variables do not skew the results

test one variable at a time to ascertain its effect on the outcome of the test group

The first. The number of variables is independent of sample size and you want as large a sample as feasible.

What US President made the following statement?

"I did not lay awake at night worrying about the problems of the Negro’s"

hint : He was president within the last 100 years

ok Y/A deleted the last word –ill substitute the word blacks
Excerpt is a quote from Jonah Goldbergs book "Liberal Fascism" page 204
Close flags very close

He was not president when he said that and it was:

Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, 1961

How much truth is there to this statement? "If you only have one son, and he joins the military, he will never

see the front lines and will never be sent overseas". ? Is this a true statement - I’m hoping….

That may have been true during the years of the draft. With the all-volunteer service, everyone is eligible to go anywhere and NOBODY has ANY reason to complain. If you don’t want to serve where the Commander sends you, NOT JOIN.
