What is the best way to handle family who make political statements on Facebook?

October 8, 2010 - 4:27 am

My cousin recently commented on Facebook that Sarah Palin is an idiot. I find this statement rude, as well as factually inaccurate. Whether you agree or not, I am just asking for advice about what to do when your family makes political statements on Facebook that you strongly disagree with? Do you ignore them or try to respond in a nice way? I usually ignore them, but sometimes I feel like it is wrong not to address them–especially when they are slanderous, mean, or untrue.

In and of itself, there’s nothing wrong with making political statements on Facebook.

Why don’t YOUR use YOUR Facebook page and post YOUR political opinions?

I would simply de-friend such a person.

Myself, I would probably post something like "Sarah Palin is not an idiot" and leave it at that. Let the cousin make the next move.

I generally just post my own opinion and ignore them. Of course, I also back mine up with some sort of fact that can be easily looked up. Then, if they want to get insulting, that’s them, and you will have expressed yourself without stooping down to their level.

First, allow political discussions to help educate the ignorant left.
Second, stick to the facts unless it is someone you want to totally humiliate with their ignorance.
Third, if you want to humiliate them, then use terms such as ignorant and obamatron.
Fourth, ask questions to make them support their position, since it is a religion with them which is based on false information, they have no facts to support their lies. They parrot the Corrupt News Network, or the All Barrack Channel, or worse the Propaganda Broadcasting Service.
Fifth, if they persist with their ranting and raving, under the propaganda idea that if you say something long enough and loud enough, it becomes truth, defriend them, in my experince, they beg to come back.

The most accurate advise you will receive will come from your critics. I believe this may also apply to your situation. Sometimes a person can progress spiritually or even politically when they face strife, conflict, a different point of view, or a difference of opinion. I hope this works out for your family.
